Principal's Weekly Phone Message
Good evening Yates Mill families. This is Mrs. Adkins with an announcement for the week of April 21, 2014. If your child received an invitation to the summer school that will be hosted this summer at Yates Mill, please be sure to return it tomorrow as we need to finalize our numbers.
The last day of our jump rope club will be Wednesday morning April 30th. Our 2nd-5th grade jumpers have had an awesome time this year meeting before school practicing old tricks and learning new ones. Come join them at Spring Festival and practice YOUR jump roping skills!
Speaking of jump roping, I am so proud to announce that YMES continues to be in the top schools for Jump Rope for Heart. This year we raised a whopping $10,494 for the American Heart Association. Thank you to Cindi Parker, our PE teacher, for promoting this and parents and students for reaching out to help others, another reason why Yates Mill is the best!
Please mark your calendars because on Wednesday, April 23, the PTA is hosting a Meet and Greet from 2:30-3:30 and 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Come find out how you can be more involved at Yates Mill Elementary by just volunteering a little of your time.
This Tuesday we are encouraging everyone to recognize Earth Day by wearing either blue or green to school. In conjunction with an awareness about our Earth we are calling all Yates Mill Families!!! This Saturday, April 26th we will be having a fitness and beautification event at Yates Mill. At 8:30 we will have the run registration hosted by our Leadership Club and Relay for Life Club. The cost is $2.00 for an individual and $5.00 for a family. (benefits Yates Mill’s Relay for Life Team)
At 9:00 there will be a One Mile Fun Run and then at 9:30 we will have Run the Zones, which is a two mile trail and track run. Followed by Zone Clean Up and Repair from 10:00 am- 12:00. Some examples of cleaning up and repairing our campus include bird house repair, storm debris removal, mulch moving, and garden box repair. All students and families invited; however, all students must be accompanied by an adult.
Some future dates to mark on your calendar include a mini First in Fitness event at Yates Mill on April 29th with students from East Garner Elementary and Herbert Akins. This event is taking place in lieu of the annual First in Fitness event which was cancelled in March due to inclement weather. Feel free to come on out to YMES to support our students. Also, the spring book fair will take place from April 29th thru May 2nd. We hope everyone will also be able to attend the PTA’s Spring Festival on Friday, May 2nd in the evening.
All students at Yates Mill are working to meet a reading goal so that they can duct tape me to the wall at the end of the school year! Each grade level has set a goal for the students to meet in regards to reading whether it is a certain number of books in the fourth quarter or reading a certain number of minutes each evening. I am encouraging everyone to meet their goal as I don’t want to fall off of the wall because not enough students earned a piece of tape. Plus, I want them to read each day because I know it will help them grow as readers and learners.
We know we will have a productive week together as we Leap into Excellence by Putting Children First. Have a good evening!
